National Spay Day - February 22, 2011

MN SNAP is Organizing a Local Spay-a-thon!

In honor of the HSUS’s 17th annual National Spay Day, MN SNAP is organizing a local spay-a-thon. The MN SNAP mobile surgical vehicle will be on-site at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) where we have committed to perform surgeries for at least 55 animals. These will be animals from the low-income community, Minneapolis feral cats, and adoptees from MACC. Concurrently, area veterinarians who have volunteered their time and services will perform spay/neuters at their offices on animals from the MN SNAP waiting list. They will be collecting the same low surgery fees that MN SNAP charges, typically $40-$60. They will then pass those fees back to MN SNAP, helping to enable MN SNAP to continue doing its valuable work throughout the year.

Why Hold a Spay-a-thon?

In Minnesota alone, estimates are that over 90,000 companion animals a year are euthanized due primarily to overpopulation issues. MN SNAP is a registered 501c3 who, in partnership with Blue Sky Veterinary Services, has the mission, “to end the suffering and death of homeless animals due to pet overpopulation by providing high-quality, affordable, and accessible spay and neuter services to Minnesota shelters, rescue organizations, and the companion animals of the low-income community.” We travel the area in our mobile surgical vehicle, bringing low cost spay and neuter to the pets of qualifying low income individuals. We have been operating since the end of April 2010, and have performed more than 4,000 surgeries to date. Since our inception there has been such a high level of demand for our services that we have a waiting list that numbers in the thousands. The average wait time is 3 months.

This Spay-a-thon will serve several purposes. It will facilitate the spay/neuter of many animals. It will bring needed attention to this issue, to MN SNAP, to MACC, and to the participating Veterinarians/Clinics. It will help MN SNAP chip away at a very large wait list. It will help to forge even stronger relationships between MN SNAP and the veterinary community. It will help MN SNAP to continue doing the important work that they do every day.

How Do Veterinary Clinics Participate?

MN SNAP is hoping to maximize the impact of National Spay Day by asking local veterinary professionals to contribute their time and services to the cause. We would like you to commit to perform 5, 10, or even 20 spay/neuters from our waiting list, which currently sits above 1,000 animals. We will handle the scheduling, and you will handle the surgeries at your facility. We ask that you collect MN SNAP’s normal fees ($40-$60) and then donate the fees collected to MN SNAP in order to allow us to continue doing this necessary work all year long. Any return business that you acquire from these patrons is solely to your own benefit. What better way to take part in honoring this day while promoting your practice.

In return for your generosity, MN SNAP promises you the following:
  • to include you and your practice on the MN SNAP website
  • to do our best to shower participating members with the wide array of PR available
  • to provide you with receipts/documentation to insure that the time/resources that you are donating are tax deductible
  • to continue doing everything that we can, every day of the year, to work towards accomplishing our mission
We look forward to your prompt commitment to participate as National Spay Day approaches quickly.

Please contact us at 612-720-8236 with any questions, suggestions, or feedback.
